Steamboat Springs’ Commitment to Environmental Sustainability

Steamboat Springs’ Commitment to Environmental Sustainability

Steamboat Springs is actively implementing initiatives to preserve its natural environment and promote sustainability. The city’s vision statement emphasizes “preserving our past while assuring an economically, culturally, and environmentally sustainable future.” This commitment is evident in various programs and projects aimed at enhancing the mountain environment cherished by the community.

Water Conservation Efforts

In response to ongoing drought conditions, the Parks & Recreation Department has introduced a comprehensive Water Management Action Plan. This plan establishes a tiered, climate-based irrigation strategy for city parks and facilities, balancing responsible water conservation with the need to maintain safe, healthy, and usable public spaces throughout the summer season. Parks and facilities are organized into three tiers based on community use and operational importance, with lower priority areas experiencing increased water stress and reduced irrigation as part of the city’s conservation strategy.

Restoration Projects

The Yampa River/Walton Creek Confluence Restoration Project has received a $5 million grant from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. This funding aims to restore floodplain, riparian habitat, and wetland areas, promoting biodiversity and enhancing the long-term resilience of the Yampa River to future floods, wildfires, and drought. The city has also raised $7.9 million for the project, with construction anticipated to begin in 2027-2028.

Destination Stewardship

The Steamboat Springs Chamber has adopted the Destination Stewardship Action Plan, focusing on economy, cultural heritage, and environmental stewardship. Initiatives include the “Do Steamboat Springs Right” campaign, encouraging responsible recreation, respecting wildlife, and using alternative transportation. Partnerships with the Colorado Tourism Office and Expedia have led to the distribution of reusable bags and water bottles in accommodations, promoting sustainable practices among visitors.

Environmental Education

Yampatika’s Environmental Learning Center at Legacy Ranch offers educational programs for children and adults, emphasizing sustainable living and environmental stewardship. The center hosts summer camps, school field trips, and service learning opportunities, providing a rural backdrop for hands-on learning experiences.

Climate Adaptation

Recognizing the impacts of climate change, the city has developed the Fish Creek Watershed Wildfire Protection Plan. This plan addresses the increasing frequency and severity of wildfires resulting from climate change, overgrown forests, and pest infestations. Given that the Fish Creek basin provides over 90% of the community’s drinking water, protecting this watershed is crucial for water security.

Through these initiatives, Steamboat Springs demonstrates a proactive approach to environmental sustainability, ensuring the preservation of its natural resources for future generations.
